Patient Testimonials

Francisca González

“League Against Cancer was for me an oasis of faith and hope. When I arrived there, I was sad and discouraged like all cancer patients. But in “The League” my sadness turned into optimisms, thanks to the love and professionalism of the volunteers, the nurses, and the administrators. All of them are like angels. They always treated me with special care, giving me courage in my fight against cancer. My special thanks go to Dr. Luis Villa for his generosity. Thank you, Dr. Villa, for accepting me, and for giving me another opportunity to face life with a smile again. At “The League” I felt like part of the family: supported, accompanied, and loved by everyone. The optimism and generosity of every person that works there is infinite, and their human warmth made my road easier as I faced the very hard times I am going through now. My gratitude to “The League Against Cancer” will be eternal: they gave me back my joy, my will to live, and my smile."

Ana Maria Polo

"My name is Ana Maria Polo. I am the arbiter of “Caso Cerrado” (Closed Case) and a breast cancer survivor. This June it will be three years since my mastectomy, and I feel better and stronger each day because I have learned that life is fragile, and that we should take care every day of our bodies and minds. I am fortunate that my insurance pays for all my operations and treatments. However, I know there are millions of people that do not have health insurance, and they have to face this cruel disease without economic support. This is why I believe the work of the “League Against Cancer” is priceless, and we should support “The League” until every patient in this country has the means to face cancer with dignity and MONEY. I ask all the patients that are going through this horrible disease not to EVER lose their faith and hope, because with God’s help and the “Leguae Against Cancer”, their cancer will soon be a CLOSED CASE."

"The League Against Cancer means hope, support, love, and faith. When you arrive in this place worried, hurting and very sad, the doors open up as well as the hearts of every person that works here. We are very thankful to all personnel, doctors, and volunteers. We have no words to express our gratitude for everything they have done, because when this disease arrives, it affects not only the patient, but his entire family. The “League” was the miracle that allowed me to take my daughter to the altar. Many thanks, and God bless you!"

"It is hard to express what you feel when you are diagnosed with cancer. The feeling is of hopelessness and great emptiness. But it must be even harder when you do not have the necessary means to face this evil, because the treatments are so expensive, almost unaffordable. And I ask myself: What would happen to these people if there was no “League Against Cancer”? What expectations of surviving would they have if the “League” would not help them and assume all these enormous expenses? The work of the “League Against Cancer” is commendable. I did not have to use their services, but I know hundreds of cases that have been able to survive because the “League” made the latest and most sophisticated treatments available to them. This is why I ask you, in the name of all those patients that have survived thanks to the work of the “League,” to cooperate. There is no small donation, they are all big. Cancer will not wait. We need to act."

"Towards the end of May of last year I started to feel inflammation and strong pains in my abdomen. I was a nurse’s assistant, and I was covered by a small insurance. In the hospital, they performed surgery, and a small tumor was discovered in my cervix. When I began chemotherapy sessions, my insurance notified me that they would not cover it. I asked God to help me and to guide my steps. The doctor that was treating me referred me to the “League Against Cancer” - And the miracle happened! In this marvelous place, angels full of professionalism and love received me. Dr. Jacobo Tangir, gynecologist-oncologist, took my case. Last December, I married by fiancée after a two-year relationship, and, almost during my honeymoon, I was in surgery again. I can only ask you to cooperate with the “League Against Cancer” so these doors always remain open to save lives and to give hope to all those that do not have anywhere else to go."

"How can I explain in a few words what the “League Against Cancer” means to me, and to thousands of others like me. I have only one answer: The greatest and most beautiful thing in my life. I had no medical insurance when I faced this terrible ordeal: cancer. When I was desperate and disoriented, God enlightened me and I came to the “League.” Not only the efficiency of its personnel and volunteers, but also the love and comfort that they offered me. Thank you, Dr. Luis Villa, for giving back to me the greatest gift- Life!"

Grace Leon

"I never thought I would find myself, after a 30-year bank career, without life insurance and facing the terrible disease of cancer. Like many executives in our community, I had the honor to represent for many years the “League Against Cancer” within my bank. Year after year we participated in their telethons, and we witnessed how this organization helped those unfortunate patients that did not have the necessary means to fight the disease. I always thought that “this” happened to “others,” not to “us.” A few weeks before I was diagnosed, my health insurance was cancelled without any explanation. I don’t have to tell you that the devastating news of my illness, together with my situation without insurance, took me to the point of desperation. After realizing the difficult situation I was in, the answer to my dilemma was only one: the “League Against Cancer.” With my daughter, I knocked on their door. Today, I give testimony that the angels do not have wings- they are on this earth, and many of them are volunteers of the “League Against Cancer.” Even though the war has not yet been won, thanks to the “League” I dare again to make plans for the future. The “League Against Cancer” has given me the greatest gift I had ever received- the gift of life, the hope of sharing it again with my children and family, to be able to enjoy my four grandchildren, the dream of seeing them grow up. My most profound gratitude to Dr. José Noy, Teresa, Mary Lilly, Olguita…to my guardian angel Carmen, for her personal and professional support; Marianita, Maria Luisa, and finally, to all that wonderful personnel at the “League.” I will not forget my peers in battle, for sharing together the ups and downs of our treatments. To all of you my thanks, especially for teaching me the humbleness to accept that it can happen to any of us."

Parents of Adriana Castañeda

“Fighting leukemia since 2 years old” We are Jorge and Beatriz Castañeda, from Peru. Like any young couple, we thought we could plan our future. We had two daughters: Daniela and Adriana - we were the prototype of a happy family. But one day, when Adriana was two years old, and after recurring symptoms common in any child, she was diagnosed with leukemia. What can I tell you? Our life crumbled. No one is prepared to receive such devastating news - leukemia in a little girl that is just starting to live, that is all movement, laughter and joy. We were desperately seeking immediate medical attention for Adriana, and we knew that for every minute that passed without treatment, her disease was getting worse. We had no economic means or medical insurance. It was then when we found out about the “League Against Cancer,” and we did not hesitate to knock on their door, which was opened wide to us. Ever since that moment, the “League” was the answer to all our prayers, and we found in them the family we had left behind. They received us with love and professionalism, they offered us comfort and hope, and, above all, they gave Adriana the best medical treatment possible. The “League” helped us without any economic interest; their only objective was for Adriana to get everything she needed. She is still being treated at the “League” with the best and most humane medical attention. Adriana is now 10 years old, and she is a normal child: she attends school, has friends, plays and sings. We are happy again. We know we are not alone; we count on thousands of people that support the “League Against Cancer” with money, time, work, love and solidarity with the pain of others. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!"

Yolanda Garcías

"There is a very well know institution among us that faces adversities and impossibilities: the “League Against Cancer.” In this institution, despite enormous limitations and difficulties, they keep on fighting, they never lose their sense of humor, and they show us that there are no impossibilities or adversities that cannot be conquered by looking for solutions. I, Yolanda Garcías, am thankful with all my heart to this institution, “League Against Cancer ” for all the unselfish help that they have given me to fight, to overcome, and to eliminate such undesirable disease as cancer. Thank you very much"

"The League Against Cancer is wonderful. Two years ago I came down with testicular cancer. Being so young, I did not know how to react or what to expect. But with the help of great doctors by the name of Dr. Antonio Ucar and Dr. George Suarez and the the League's warm and caring staff, they did not just help my well being, they also raised my spirits. I am very thankful to have been treated at the League. Thank you League Against Cancer."
