Since 1975, the League Against Cancer has simply outgrown its original clinic and has had to relocate to a different area in the same downtown neighborhood. The League moved in June of 2000 to a new facility at 2180 Southwest 12th Avenue named the Lourdes P. Aguila Oncology Center, recognizing its first General Coordinator. Twice as large as the previous clinic, it includes the Jorge Mas Canosa Chemotherapy Suite, furnished and equipped with a donation from Miami's Mas family and other donors.
Education and early detection also adds an increased financial burden to our organization. From a financial perspective, screenings are only a tip of the iceberg as they translate to an increase in positive diagnoses of Cancer. At this point, the League assumes the complete cost of treatment, which may involve biopsies, radiation, therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, medications, and other procedures as determined by the physicians. It is common knowledge that the cost of medical care has escalated dramatically in this country. Unfortunately, the League is not immune to these rising costs.
Cancer treatment is one of the most expensive of all medical therapies. The cost of saving the life of a single Cancer patient can easily escalate into hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hundreds of thousands of dollars that are simply unaffordable by many cancer victims.
